The Money Question

Financial Support from Your Organization

Professional Development Funding

Most companies have a professional development fund that can be used towards personal coaching and training. Once your company agrees to invest in you as a critical leader, we can provide invoices and directly charge a credit card. We can handle the admin directly with them. Your coaching remains 100% confidential. To receive funding, check in with your manager or HR Business Partner.

Career Transition Support

Onboarding

As part of a sign-on package, you can negotiate financial support for coaching during the first couple of months. That way, you'll have an immediate ally in your corner for a career transition into a new company, role, team, and function, so that you can confidently and decisively hit the ground running.

Offboarding

If your company has decided to part ways with you, that's always a bitter pill to swallow. While you are trying to wrap your head around what just happened, keep in mind that some companies offer career coaching support as part of their "offboarding package". Take advantage of what you can get in a situation that'll likely already be overwhelming and scary.

Investing in Yourself

If you choose to invest in yourself personally, we can accommodate payment schedules that fit your financial situation and preferences. Keep in mind that coaching can be a tax-deductible professional development expense. Check with your tax accountant based on your current situation.

The “Can the company pay for my coaching?” conversation

We prepared answers for common questions and concerns by decision-makers regarding the funding of your coaching.

  • Consider highlighting how coaching is a strategic investment rather than an expense. If you are in a leadership position, you might mention that a $1,000/month investment could create ripple effects across your team that increase overall productivity and recoup such investment in no time. You could explain how showing up more present, decisive, and confident might improve team collaboration and prioritization. You might reference the ICF studies showing a 788% ROI on coaching investments, and note that CB Insights research shows team issues are among the top three reasons startups fail - not technology problems. You as a leader are responsible for a productive healthy team culture. Your coaching results trickle into the way the team collaborates.

  • You might acknowledge the value of existing training programs while noting research from the Learning and Development Roundtable showing that training alone improves performance by only 22%, while training paired with coaching jumps to 88% improvement. Consider explaining how psychometric tools like the Leadership Circle can provide personalized insights that make training concepts stick. For example, when learning about conflict management in training, coaching helps understand why you specifically tend to avoid conflict, become controlling, or people please, and creates tailored strategies for your actual interactions with your team.

  • You might frame coaching as developing practical self-awareness tied directly to leadership effectiveness. Consider mentioning that while many tech leaders categorize self-awareness as a "soft skill" that employees figure out themselves, it actually drives critical business outcomes. You could reference how coaching provides personalized insight into strengths and opportunities directly tied to Leadership Effectiveness—navigating complex interpersonal dynamics and systems, balancing relationships with delivering tasks, and maintaining authenticity under pressure. The Harvard Business Review shows leaders with high self-awareness are 36% more likely to make good decisions.

  • Consider building on Question 1 by presenting a three-part ROI framework:

    1. Stronger leaders develop better products (McKinsey research shows 21% higher success rates) by making better decisions and orchestrating teams more effectively.

    2. The International Coach Federation reports teams led by coached leaders complete projects 23% faster with fewer revisions and conflicts because self-aware leaders set clearer cultures and expectations.

    3. Leaders who understand their own limiting patterns report higher productivity overall by avoiding reactive stress behaviors.

  • Internal mentoring is useful but also limited. Consider mentioning the DDI Global Leadership Forecast showing external coaching delivers 2.7x more impact than internal mentoring alone. You could explain that internal mentors are constrained by organizational politics and relationships, making it difficult to provide the radical candor that’s sometimes needed. Additionally, internal mentors rarely have expertise in frameworks like the Enneagram that reveal underlying patterns driving behaviors. Consider suggesting a combined approach: external coaching for foundational insights and internal mentoring to apply those insights within your specific context.

  • While acknowledging BetterUp's value, you might note that many coaches on their platform don't provide specialized expertise in the Leadership Circle and Enneagram frameworks. Consider mentioning that most BetterUp coaches may not have worked in technology roles, which sometimes limits their understanding of your specific challenges. They may also be less skilled or specialized. With us, you know what you get.

  • Consider identifying three reasons why investing in your development would create maximum organizational impact:

    1. Your role may sit at a critical nexus point in the company, interfacing with specific departments daily—meaning your improved leadership would ripple across multiple teams.

    2. You may have demonstrated commitment to growth through specific achievements, showing you apply learning immediately to business challenges.

    3. You could create a structured plan to share insights with peers.

  • Consider explaining that leadership coaching is actually most valuable for roles requiring leading without authority. Maybe you are a manager with high cross-functional visibility (e.g. product manager)? Then you need exceptional influence skills to align teams that speak different languages - without any formal power. You might mention that the Leadership Circle specifically measures creative competencies essential for lateral leadership—systems thinking, strategic focus, and purposeful collaboration. Harvard Business Review research confirms that lateral leadership skills are increasingly more critical than hierarchical management in driving innovation. You could add that the Enneagram enhances this by revealing your patterns under the pressure of stakeholder conflicts and competing priorities—exactly the challenges you face daily in your high-stakes role. McKinsey research shows that influence without authority is one of the most critical skills for roles like product management.
